Molecular Structure:

Feverfew(Tanacetum parthenium; syn. Chrysanthemum parthenium (L.) Pers., Chrysanthemum parthenium (L.) Bernh.Pyrethrum parthenium Sm.), a member of the sunflower family, is a short perennial with citrus-scented leavesthat blooms between July and October, and gives off a strong and bitter odor. Its yellow-green leaves are alternate (the leaves grow on both sides of the stem at alternating levels), and turn downward with short hairs. The small, daisy-like yellow flowers are arranged in a dense flat-topped cluster. Feverfew should be planted in full sun, 38–46 cm (15–18 in) apart and grows up to 61 cm (24 in) tall. Feverfew was native to Eurasia; specifically the Balkan Peninsula, Anatolia and the Caucasus, but cultivation has spread it around the world and it is now also found in Europe, the Mediterranean, North America, Chile, and China. It is a traditional medicinal herb which is found in many old gardens, and is also occasionally grown for ornament.

The word "feverfew" derives from the Latin febrifugia, meaning "fever reducer." It has been used for reducing fever, for treating headaches, fevers, arthritis and digestive problems. Feverfew is also used to treat menstrual irregularities, labor difficulties, skin conditions, stomach aches, and asthma.Feverfew may also have GABAergic effects. Its main active ingredient parthenolide has also been found in 2005 to induce cell death in leukemia cancer stem cells. Feverfew has been used to calm red and irritated skin.

Feverfew products usually consist of dried feverfew leaves, but all parts of the plant that grow above ground may also be used for medicinal purposes. The active ingredients in feverfew include parthenolide and tanetin, and Feverfew also contains a relatively large amount of melatonin. The migraine-relieving activity of feverfew is believed to be due to parthenolide, an active compound that helps relieve smooth muscle spasms. In particular, it helps prevent the constriction of blood vessels in the brain (one of the leading causes of migraine headaches). Parthenolide also inhibits the actions of compounds that cause inflammation and may inhibit cancer cell growth.

The Feverfew Herb Extract used in dietary supplements is derived from the whole aerial parts of the plant feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium L.).

Benefits

Treat headaches

Treat migraine headaches

Treat arthritis,

Treat other painful disorders (stomach aches)

Treat asthma

Treat digestive problems

Treat menstrual irregularities

Treat labor difficulties

Treat skin conditions (calm red and irritated skin)

Treat leukemia cancer

Mechanism

It is hypothesized that by inhibiting the release of serotonin and prostaglandins, both of which are believed to aid the onset of migraines, feverfew limits the inflammation of blood vessels in the head. This would, in theory, stop the blood vessel spasm which is believed to contribute to headaches.

Safety

Feverfew Herb Extract is safe, no side effects have been reported to date, but relying on this type of treatment alone, and avoiding conventional medical care, may have serious health consequences.

Adverse effects include: gastrointestinal distress, mouth ulcers, and antiplatelet actions.

If feverfew is taken for any length of time as a medicinal herb, sudden discontinuation can result in a withdrawal syndrome consisting of headache, irritability, trouble sleeping and joint pain. As with any other medicinal herb, consult with a knowledgeable practitioner before beginning treatment with this herb.

It is contraindicated in pregnancy.

Dosage

•  The typical dose is 100-300mg per day (usually in 2-4 doses throughout the day).Feverfew supplements should be standardized to contain at least 0.2% parthenolide. Capsules or tablets of feverfew generally contain at least 205 mcg. parthenolide; however, it might take four to six weeks before they become effective, and feverfew is not a remedy for acute migraine attacks.
•  Consult physicians for different condition specifics.
